Exploring new (sociotechnical) infrastructural foundations for collective synthesis

Welcome! You have found your way to the project website for a Sloan-supported research project, led by a team of researchers at the University of Maryland, which investigates (sociotechnical) infrastructural foundations for collective synthesis.

What is the goal of this project?
Synthesis is critical for research progress, but not currently served by our predominant scholarly communication infrastructure. New models of synthesis infrastructures have been proposed (such as semantic publishing), but have struggled to gain uptake. A problem is that these technical models do not fit well with existing foundations of workflows, tools, practices, and sociocultural aspects of research environments. So we want to identify and cultivate favorable sociotechnical foundations for these new synthesis infrastructures.

What will we actually do?
As a first step towards this, in this project we will systematically characterize workflows, tools, practices, and sociocultural aspects of research environments that could serve as favorable foundations new synthesis infrastructures. We invite you to join us!
